Chetna Organic
Chetna Organic works improve the livelihood of small-scale cotton farmers in
India by building their capacity to grow cotton organically and be Fair Trade
certified. This eliminates the use of expensive and harmful chemicals including
pesticides and significantly increases income for the farmers.
Through knowledge-sharing on social and technical issues, farmers learn to
market their fiber, run their own organization, manage revolving credit funds
and work together in their communities to improve conditions for everyone.
Chetna, which means "complete" in Hindi was initiated by the Dutch NGO Solidaridad
in 2004, and collaborates with Coyuchi Organic Cotton in the United States.
The farmers self-organized to form the Chetna Organic Farmers Association in
June 2007.
