The Green Belt Movement International
Dr. Wangari Maathai founded The Green Belt Movement in 1977 as a grassroots
effort to plant trees and improve Kenya’s environment. Twenty-seven years
later, she became the first environmentalist and the first African woman to win
the Nobel Peace Prize.
By empowering women to plant trees, Dr. Maathai hoped to promote gender equity
while protecting the environment. Over the last thirty years, The Green Belt
Movement has planted 40 million trees and has helped 30,000 women lift
themselves out of poverty.
Recently, The Green Belt Movement expanded overseas to become The Green Belt
Movement International (GBMI). GBMI’s programs in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America,
and South America are part of a worldwide campaign to plant one billion trees
in the next decade.
