One H.E.A.R.T.

One H.E.A.R.T. was founded in 1999 at the request of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, to establish safe motherhood and newborn healthcare practices for the Tibetan population, which suffers from one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world.

One H.E.A.R.T. integrates Western medicine within the context of Tibetan medical and cultural traditions, training birth attendants and providing necessary medical supplies to save the lives of mothers and babies with no access to health care. Through their programs, village doctors receive the necessary skills and birthing equipment to ensure Tibetan mothers a safe, supervised delivery environment.

This training, along with One H.E.A.R.T.’s community-based educational programs and their distribution of birth kits, has resulted in a regional reduction of maternal mortality by 67 percent and newborn deaths by 33 percent over the past year alone. The widespread success of this campaign has resulted in invitations to expand the program into other rural regions of the Himalayas.

Through One H.E.A.R.T., ABC Home & Planet Foundation is working to save mothers’ and babies’ lives, while promoting the health and welfare of the Tibetan people and their culture, one birth at a time.
