Riverkeeper
Since 1966, Riverkeeper has led the effort to restore the Hudson River and has
served as the region’s chief environmental watchdog. Riverkeeper also works to
safeguard the drinking water supply that serves over 9 million New Yorkers.
Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, Riverkeeper has been working to
permanently retire the Indian Point nuclear power point – just 24 miles upwind
from New York City — which has a troubling history of security and safety
problems.
Twenty years ago, the Hudson was considered one of the most polluted waterways
in the nation—a veritable cesspool of human and chemical waste. Today, thanks
largely to Riverkeeper’s efforts, the river is healthier and more accessible
than it has been in over half a century. As a result of Riverkeeper’s
aggressive and creative environmental advocacy, New York residents are safer.
ABC Home & Planet Foundation is honored to support
Riverkeeper.
