Transforming Pain to Power for Survivors of War and Sexual Violence

Offer a year of schooling and a safe haven to a survivor of sexual violence and war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and allow a woman to transform her pain to power.

Since 1996, sexual violence against women and children has been extensively used as a weapon of war to torture, humiliate, and destroy families in villages in the war zone. An estimated 25 to 50 percent of all the survivors of sexual violence are children, predominantly girls. V-Day, in partnership with UNICEF, is working with groups on the ground in DRC to develop City of Joy, a special facility for the survivors of violence who have been left without family, community and the capacity to have children. City of Joy will offer a safe haven for women, and will support them as they rebuild their lives by providing necessary education as well as artisan training to create an avenue for economic empowerment.

Your gift offers one year of schooling to a survivor, providing an essential healing refuge to cultivate a new generation of powerful female leaders in the DRC.
