Women for Afghan Women
Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is an organization of Afghan and non-Afghan women
from the New York area working to ensure the human rights of Afghan women.
Three years after the expulsion of the Taliban, prospects for the women of
Afghanistan remain precarious. Afghan women and young girls suffer from
poverty, illiteracy, depression and exclusion from civic life.
Since 2001, WAW has advocated for the representation of women in all areas of
Afghan life: political, economic, social, cultural and religious. WAW provides
literacy education and vocational training, supports women seeking to escape
intolerable domestic situations, and develops income-generating projects for
destitute widows. Recently, WAW entered into partnership with Business Council
for Peace to train Afghan women in small business development.
