The Green Belt Movement
Founded by Professor Wangari Maathai, the Green Belt Movement (GBM) is a grassroots non-governmental organization working in environmental conservation and community development in Kenya for over 30 years. What began as a grassroots tree planting program to address the challenges of deforestation, soil erosion and lack of water is now a vehicle for empowering women and communities. Its mission is to strive for better environmental management, community empowerment, and livelihood improvement using tree-planting as an entry point. The results of these efforts are a reduction in soil erosion in critical watersheds, restoration and protection of thousands of acres of biodiversity-rich indigenous forest, and hundreds of thousands of women and their families standing up for their rights and those of their communities, and living healthier, more productive lives
The Green Belt Movement Gift of Compassion plants fifty trees to support Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai's revolutionary commitment to sustainable development and women's empowerment.
