Founded in 1984 by environmental activist Dr. Vandana Shiva, Navdanya is an Indian-based non-governmental organisation which promotes biodiversity conservation, biodiversity, organic farming, the rights of farmers, and the process of seed saving.
Navdanya means “nine seeds” and also the “new gift.” In today’s context of biological and ecological destruction, seed savers are the true givers of seed. This gift or “dana” of Navadhanyas (nine seeds) is the ultimate gift – it is a gift of life, of heritage and continuity. Conserving seed is conserving biodiversity, conserving knowledge of the seed and its utilization, conserving culture, conserving sustainability.
The Navdanya Gift of Compassion supports farmers in India to develop an organic farm using indigenous techniques. Generating a sustainable income releases farmers from the cycle of debt incurred by industrial agriculture.
